Athlete's Foot

Image description

Definitions

Athlete’s foot is a common infection of the skin on the bottom of our feet or in between our toes by fungus and can be characterized by itching, scaling, redness or the formation of small blisters. The fungus has the potential to spread to the toenails, causing them to become thickened, discolored and painful (onychomycosis).

While this infection is common among athletes, keep in mind that it can affect non-athletes as well.

Causes:

  • Shoes commonly create a warm, dark and humid environment that encourages fungal growth.
  • Contracted in dressing rooms, hotel and locker room showers, and swimming pool locker rooms where bare feet may come in contact with fungus.
  • Excessive perspiration from the feet
  • Weakened immune system (i.e. Diabetic foot)
  • Close proximity of the smaller toes
  • Pre-existing fungal nail infection

Treatment and Prevention:

  • Keep shoes and socks dry as a preventative measure
  • Wear cotton or wool socks to help wick moisture
  • Practice good foot hygiene, including daily washing of the feet with soap and water
  • Dry feet carefully, especially between the toes
  • Change shoes regularly
.

What can a Chiropodist do for you?

  • Perform a physical exam and identify the source of problem and discuss treatment options.
  • Recommend proper foot hygiene and methods to minimize perspiration.
  • Prescribe a topical anti-fungal medication.
  • Recommend exercise and stretching programs.
  • Recommend footwear and over-the-counter products that protect the feet from re-infection.
